The Capital of Culture programme was published on Wednesday, 9th June. At the same time, the tickets for the first performances became available.

The first 120 projects in the 2011 programme were published on Wednesday. The Turku 2011 Programme is a wide entity that emphasises the long-term impacts of all of the activities. The programme’s key goal is to highlight the importance of culture for the well-being of people and the environment.

Event tickets and event timetables available now

1827 - Infernal Musical 21.1. - 5.2.2011
The shingled roofs were ablaze and the storm fanned the flames when Turku burned to ash in 1827. The young vocal cords of Turku will be put to the test as the air will become heavy with the fire of the greatest all time classics of foreign and domestic heavy metal. The story of the Great Fire of Turku will be told in true heavy metal style.

Energo 18. - 19.3.2011
The a cappella group Rajaton together with the UNI band will perform ENERGO, a new cyber opera composed by Ilkka Niemeläinen. Human voices, acoustic and electronic musical instruments and a virtual video background set will deliver the performance. The singers and musicians will use instruments equipped with motion detectors to control the lights, sounds and the set for the performance to give it an intriguing and unique dimension.

Tero Saarinen Company: Borrowed Light 6. – 7.5.2011
The Tero Saarinen Company’s largest production, Borrowed Light, kicks off its European tour in Turku in May 2011. Finland is eagerly anticipating the return of the work, considered to be one of the greatest international successes of the group. Borrowed Light is a unique combination of dance and live music that has been highly praised by audiences and critics worldwide.

Middle-Aged Hair 13.2. - 20.2.2011
The 200 performers in the musical ‘Hair’ will be drawn from the typical middle-aged population of Turku with no prior musical theatre experience. This musical has created quite an hubbub, and naturally, a very positive one, right from the start. It promises to deliver the participants back to their youth, to the time when the spirit of the sixties prevailed.

The Dancing Tower 14. - 30.4.2011The 30th anniversary work of the Turku AB Dance Company (Aurinkobaletti), The Dancing Tower, will climb into the skies over Turku and Tallinn during the Capital of Culture year 2011. The ten-metre high tower will lay bare the core of humanity: a soul bursting with energy, creativity and dreams. The Dancing Tower will offer true magic, breathtaking tricks, amazing ventriloquists and trained monsters from faraway oceans.

Cirque Dracula 23.6. - 14.8.2011
Do you have the appetite for an intimate evening with Count Dracula?
The evening will begin in seductively glamorous company over a glass of blood-red wine in a candle-lit setting, accompanied by the best in European cabaret. The performance is set to take place in the Spiegeltent Theatre, to be erected in the Mannerheim Park in central Turku. International circus performers, many of them with experience at the Cirque Du Soleil, will passionately present the Count’s story using spectacular somersaults, acrobatics and kung-fu.

Tickets for the next set of events will become available during early autumn.
